So last Friday I sent out a “#FollowFriday” for one of my followers. Problem is that the person I sent it out for had no idea what “Follow Friday” was. She totally misunderstood. So I tried to find an article I could send her on “What is Follow Friday” to explain it all. Problem was I couldn’t find one. Google failed me. I ran into a bunch of blogs that tried to weave a weak and convoluted explanation in between their own agenda though. So I will use this blog to explain “What is Follow Friday” as simple and to the point as I possibly can.
How to do a #Followfriday
Say I have someone I connect with through Twitter and think that the person is a member of the Twitter community I want to recommend to everyone following me. So I send a ‘tweet’ that says, “#followfriday @isewdollies because she is a great source of entertainment” to let everyone that follows me that they should follow her as well.
Why include #followfriday?
Although it doesn’t matter where you put this “hash tag” in the message, it is important you include it. Not only are there many Twitter apps that allow people to track specific hash tags, Twitter themselves have their own search people use to track the hash tags as well. Of course you can get the same result by just using the term Follow Friday, but this won’t get the attention of the people using apps to track hash tags instead of key words. Using the hash tag covers both. So in short, it gets your message out to more than just the people that follow you. It’s the kind of back scratching karma that will really help you in the long run.
Why do a #FollowFriday?
It’s all about being social. You help a person and they have a much greater chance of helping you out as well. Plus it helps get you people of similar interests. Which of course is way better than just blind following a ton of random people.
Feel free to ask questions.
I hope this clears things up. I also hope I kept it short and simple as promised. If not feel free to send me a Twitter message and ask any questions. In closing, please send this around all day every Friday so people know “What is Follow Friday.”
